BMW, the German carmaker has announced a recall of more than 32,000 cars across the globe after it found a fault in the auxiliary water pumps used in radiators. The fault was reported after several electric cables were found to have burnt near the radiator. The recall is rather late response as the burnt cable issue came up way back in 2010.
BMW's global recall will cover vehicles built between 2008 and 2011 and powered by 8 cylinder and 12 cylinder engines. The models include the 5 Series, 7 Series, X5, X^ and the 5 Series Gran Turismo. These cars have an auxiliary water pump that over heats and melts the insulation around electric wires creating a possibility of a fire.
There have been no reported incidents of fire in BMW cars due to this faulty part. However, the German carmaker has stated that the recall will be across all model lines that have used the water pumps. BMW has said it had found 102 cases of the water pumps not functioning properly so far.
It is yet unclear how many cars in India will be recalled by BMW. Since the volume of cars sold by BMW in India is not high compared to other major markets, the percentage of cars recalled here will be on the lower side. BMW has said it would notify owners about the defect individually within a months time. It has already asked its dealers to replace the faulty pump in unsold cars.
